Facility SitingFinal incident reports of the previous major chemical industry explosions all indicate facility siting as a major issue that was overlooked. The building distance of process sites from temporary, permanent shelters and vital infrastructure like control rooms, has always been a contentious issue. Although safety convention would dictate building from process as far as possible, practicality would dictate such distances as a cause for a drain in productivity. Coupled with no specific law pertaining to siting distances as well as the many factors and models dealing with the dynamics of explosion damage, this field of research is important not only for the protection of lives but also a clear guide for a confusing and often overlooked hazard in the chemical process industry.
